My paintings are stories of women who have influenced, affected or touched me at some point in my life. I see them as reminders of what makes a woman who she is or who she was.

My new series depicts “reminders” of life’s fragility as a result of having experienced my mother’s unexpected illness, my own body’s frailties, and the sudden deaths of loved ones. The painting titled “Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth has strongly inspired me in this series due the connotations of the painting itself and the name of my mother, Cristina.

I include a few elements from the costumes of a clown because I see an ironic similarity between life and a circus clown show: a lot of make up, costumes, character, the creation of a story and then it all comes to an end. Also, the objects of illness I use are actually the ones I’ve witness and experienced.

I usually paint using acrylics, small brushes and canvases; I use a limited palette and thin layers of color paint on black and white because it’s how I imagine the stories. However, each painting has a particular treatment. I choose my models due to their facial features and if the way they carry themselves makes me think of one of the real stories’ characters; sometimes, they are the actual people from the story. I’m inspired by the work of John Currin, Odd Nerdrum, Gustave Klimt, Rembrant and The Prerraphaelites.

My intention with this new series is to express my awareness that life and health are not to be taken for granted.
